NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Yankee Stadium is about to pinch-hit as a hockey facility.
As part of the NHL’s Stadium Series, the Bronx baseball mecca will host a pair of games later this month — the Rangers vs. the Devils on Jan. 26, and then the Rangers vs. the Islanders on Jan. 29.
On Wednesday, the ice truck arrived in the Bronx while a crew built roadways and staging around the stadium, said Michael Craig, NHL senior manager of facilities operations. Starting Thursday, workers will lay out piping and ice pans — the underneath refrigeration. Craig said he hopes to start making ice by Saturday.
Craig, who has set the stage at numerous Winter Classics, told NHL.com it didn’t take him long to realize he was working in a special venue.
