Elderly Couple Win Holiday, Become Drug Mules Without Knowing It

An Australian couple, aged 64 and 72, got more than they bargained for when they were told they’d won a holiday to Canada. The prize included flights, seven nights’ accommodation, new luggage — and, as it turned out, a few kilograms of methamphetamine worth $6.7 million.

The pair suspected something was up during the flight home to Western Australia after their week-long vacation. On arrival they alerted customs officials, who found the drugs hidden in their suitcases, The Australianreported on Friday.

Police arrested a 38-year-old Canadian man at Perth airport and charged him with importing a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said. Further investigations revealed a highly-organized drug syndicate, which had been targeting older Australians via a bogus Canadian-based tour company called “AusCan Tours.”
